How I’m surviving the quarantine

Hey guys, it’s been a hot minute. In short, I’ve been really busy. Then this whole quarantine thing happened and everything stopped abruptly. I went from being busy 12 hours a day to sitting at home doing absolutely nothing. Here’s how I survived and am surviving the transition.

At first I wasn’t- surviving I mean. My biggest problem of the day was to figure out how to keep myself occupied so I didn’t lose my sanity. I had one week of no classes and then the rest of the semester is online. During the week of no school, I moved home. I figured I would slowly unpack everything so I had something to do everyday. Then, I found myself spending 4 hours unpacking every single thing in one night. It happens. During that week, I slept on average 12-14 hours a day because what else was there to do? I mostly watched TV, did homework, and organized every drawer and surface in my house.

Once school started, I got stressed. I went from going to school full-time (in person) and working 3 jobs to being home for a week with no school and no job to being a full-time online student. It was an extremely stressful time and still is. Going through this big change, while living with the fear of contracting COVID19 was a full time job in itself. (The reason I am so afraid of contracting COVID19 is because I am immunocompromised.)

So, now that school has been going for a while, I have settled into a schedule. Here are the things I do everyday to stay mentally and physically healthy:

Study/Homework– this one is obvious, but it is nice because it distracts me. I can focus on solving one problem at a time. Often, I spend around 5 hours a day doing online assignments and homework.

Exercise– this is a MUST, especially for me. Before, I was working out 4-5 days a week. I tried to keep this in my routine. I do at home workouts and run and walk outside. There are so many ways to stay healthy without a gym.

Watch Netflix– I spend around an hour a day watching TV. I did this at school as well, so I tried to keep this into my routine. It’s also a way to stay occupied and to unwind.

Do crafts/puzzles– I have always had a creative outlet. Doing crafts and puzzles not only passes time but makes my brain work. It’s a good way to unwind from the day or something to do on the weekend.

Clean– With all of this time, I used it to go through my clothes, drawers, underneath my bed, etc and clean all of the things I don’t need anymore. It’s a way to make you feel in control, when often it seems like you can’t control anything nowadays.

Play games/cards- My family and I have spent a lot of time doing games and cards. It’s super fun and also a way to get the brain working.

Do something outside- I have done bean bags, basketball, gardening, volleyball, etc outside. It’s so nice to get fresh air, a workout, and have fun all in one. I have realized that when I go outside I often sleep better because I’m actually tired.

Stay in contact with friends– during this time, it’s really hard to feel close to the people you care about. It’s so important to stay in contact with them. I’ve been facetiming and texting my friends everyday to remain in contact and make sure they’re doing okay.

Hope this helps you guys, and thanks for reading!
